George Torrance, Ph.D.

Dr. Torrance served as Vice President of Scientific Affairs for Innovus from 1996 until 2006 at the time of the formation of i3 Innovus. He is Professor Emeritus of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Management Science at McMaster University and is affiliated with the Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis and the Centre for Evaluation of Medicines. Dr. Torrance’s many publications on economic evaluation of health care include both contributions to the methods, some of which he has pioneered, and applications in various clinical areas. Methodological contributions include the use of utility theory, particularly multi-attribute utility theory, to measure individuals’ preferences for health outcomes. Dr. Torrance and his colleagues developed the Health Utilities Index, a generic utility-based measure of health-related quality of life for use in program evaluation and in the measurement of population health. He also chaired the writing group that prepared the Canadian Guidelines for the Economic Evaluation of Pharmaceuticals as well as being a member of the Panel on Cost-Effectiveness in Health and Medicine convened by the U.S. Public Health Service for the standardization of the conduct of cost-effectiveness analysis. Dr. Torrance has been awarded career achievement awards from the Society for Medical Decision Making and the International Society of Quality of Life Research. Dr. Torrance earned a doctorate degree in operations research from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
