Mary Varterasian, MD

Mary Varterasian joined i3 Drug Safety as Senior Medical Director. Mary is a board-certified oncologist/hematologist with 16 years of experience in Oncology Developmental Therapeutics including as an academic investigator and in the Pharmaceutical industry. Prior to joining i3, Mary held the position of Director of Safety and Risk Management at Pfizer, Inc. At Pfizer, Mary led the Core Safety Committee for oncology products from mid-Discovery through Phase 2, supporting 6 successful IND filings and Phase 1/Phase 2 starts for a pan-erb B irreversible inhibitor, two MEK inhibitors for oncology and inflammation indications, an HDAC inhibitor, a cell cycle inhibitor, an oncolytic adenovirus and three monoclonal antibodies. In her role at Pfizer, Mary also supported oncology in-licensing activities and site governance reviews of protocols and clinical development plans. Prior to joining Pfizer, Mary was a faculty member and clinical investigator at the Karmanos Cancer Institute/Wayne State University and specialized in the treatment of patients with hematologic malignancies. In her role as Senior Medical Director at i3 Drug Safety, Mary will provide medical consulting and project safety support internally and externally for both our pharmacovigilance and epidemiology service lines.

Mary graduated from the University of Michigan-Dearborn with a B.S. in computer science and earned her M.D. from Wayne State University in Detroit. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Northwestern University Hospital in Chicago and her specialty (fellowship) training in both hematology and oncology at the National Cancer Institute where she also conducted laboratory research in molecular genetics. Dr. Varterasian is board-certified in oncology, hematology and internal medicine. She has authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and is a member of ASCO, AACR, ASH and ABIM.
